FAQ: Don't We Lose Control By Hiring Outside Help?

It's hard to lose what you've never had.

What control? As humans, we don't really control anything. If you think about the 11 September 2001 disasters in the USA, various hurricanes, floods, fires and other curve balls nature can throw at us, you may realise we control much less than we think or we'd love to.

Then think of your people. Can you control their performance, their motivation and their loyalty? No, you can't. Nicole Kidman put it to Tom Cruise in the movie Days of Thunder...

"Control is an illusion, you infantile egomaniac. Nobody controls anything."

Do you really think you can earn other people's enthusiasm through power and control? Think about it. Think again. Think hard, please. The famous motivational speaker, Les Brown puts it this way...

"You don't ask for help because you're weak. You do so because you want to stay strong."

Besides, your dentist, lawyer and accountant are the same kind of "consultants" as I am. We all are working to enhance your quality of life. We just do it differently, depending upon our individual expertise. That's all really.

Besides if your contention is that only weak people need help from others, why the hell would anyone engage your services or buy your product? They can manage quite nicely without your help and support.

We all need independent advice from unbiased and objective outsiders. Without this advice we keep doing what we've always done and that may be the cause of all our problems.

As former chairman and CEO of General Electric, Reginald Jones, once put it this way...

"Most managers become so involved with their own companies that they get lost in the trees - it's hard for them to pull back and take a global perspective, to see the big picture. Great advisors help you to do this."

No, you don't lose control at all. You only show that you're smart enough to benefit from other people's aggregate expertise and experience.

The US president is called the world's most important person. Do you think he has several advisors because he himself is an incompetent nincompoop? I doubt it.
